CHAPTER SIX

THE EXISTENCE OF A TRIUNE GOD

GENESIS 1:1

We believe, beyond doubt, in the existence of one God who is of such infinite ability as to reveal himself in limitless forms and ways all at the same time; but who has seen fit to reveal Himself chiefly in three distinct personalities ... namely the Father, Son, and Spirit. It is because of these three persons of God that we call Him a triune God.

I. There is massive evidence proving God really does exist:

A. The existence of the universe testifies of God's existence:

1. Almost everyone admits that the universe had to start somewhere (it has not existed forever.):

a. The evolutionist says it evolved from heat and gases.
b. Many look at it (most of world) as having just come about by chance without any guiding force.
C. It really takes quite an imagination to think that something so complex, intricate, sophisticated, and gigantic as the universe could have just accidently come into being out of absolutely nothing.

2. To the honest mind, the universe stands as a great testimony to the existence of the great God of the universe:

a. Rom 1: 19-20 says the creation attests to God's existence and power.
b. Every time you look at rocks, trees, weather, stars, fish, etc., you are looking at a testimonial of God. (Man didn't make them, yet they are made, so somebody had to make them... If man didn't, then God had to have done it.
C. The scriptures make no bones about crediting the creation to God:

(1) Gen. 1-3 details God doing the creation.
(2) John 1:1-5 says all things were made by Him.

3. The earth's symmetry testifies of God's existence:

a. Observation can show you it is a very complex and efficient operation which continues day after day:

(1) The balance of nature, work of nature to heal its wounds, changing seasons, rain cycles.
(2) The laws of physics, gravitation, centrifugal force, regularity of tides, light and sound waves, etc. are most precise.

b. Some say these things operate merely by chance without any guidance.

C. That all these things operate without collision and chaos is a testimony that God attends its operation:

(1) Man has never been able to bring about perpetual motion . . . and the operation of the universe is.
(2) Col. 1:16-17 says God keeps it operating.
(3) Acts 17:24-28 also shows this.

B. The appearances of God testify of His existence:

1. Gen. 1:1 He "created" the universe an undetermined number of years ago.

2. Gen. 3:9 He talked to Adam and Eve roughly 4000 years B.C.

3. Gen. 12:1 He made promises to Abraham about 2000 B.C.

4. Ex. 3:4 He appeared to Moses in a burning bush around 1500 B.C.

5. 1 Kings 18:1 He spoke to Elijah about 900 B.C.

6. Mal. 1:1 He told Malichi what to say about 400 B.C.

7. Matt. 3:15-17 He appeared in the flesh for 33 years from about 4 B.C. to after 29 A.D. See Matthew, Mark, Luke, John.

8. Acts 9:3-6 He appeared to Paul about 35 A.D.

9. Rev. 1:1-2 He revealed Himself to John about 96 A.D.

10. Rev. 20:11 John looked into the future to at least 1971 plus the 1000 year millennium (Rev. 20:3) and God was there.

11. It would be hard to discount that many appearances, or that He, who could survive that long, really is God.

C. The Bible testifies of God's existence. (See previous lessons)

II. Our one God is a triune God:

A. There are not three Gods, there is one God:

1. Deut. 6:4 and Mk. 12:29 "The Lord our God is one Lord.

2. Rom. 3:30 "It is one God who shall justify.

3. Gal. 3:20 "God is one.

4. Eph. 4:5-6 speaks of "One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God, and one Father of all."

5. I Cor. 8:6 also verifies this truth.

B. Yet, the one God has three distinct personalities:

1. Mt. 28:19 mentions all 3 personalities. . ."Father"; "Son"; "Spirit."

2. Mt. 3:16-17 shows all three at the same time.

3. Eph. 4:30 mentions Father and Spirit.

4. I Tim. 3:16 mentions Father and Son.

5. II Cor. 13:14 names all three.

C. The three personalities of God are always in absolute harmony, unity, agreement:

1. Gen. 1:1 says, "In the beginning God (plural noun) created" (singular verb). Shows harmony of God.

2. Jn. 10:30 Jesus said, "I and My Father are one."

3. To illustrate: A chair is one chair, yet it has three distinct dimensions: height, width, length.
