FOREWORD

               This Basic Discipleship teacher’s manual is not an attempt to reinvent the wheel in discipleship training.  So many good people and churches are already doing it and have been for a long, long time.  Thank God for them; there is great need for more.

          Discipleship is fulfilling the third aspect of The Great Commission, “teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:20).  It is follow-through with new believers, bringing them to some measure of spiritual maturity.  It is replicating ourselves in others.  It is the crux of II Timothy 2:2 which says, And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also” It’s the only way to guarantee a next generation.  Without discipleship, we’re doomed for extinction; it’s just a matter of time.

          I have prepared this teacher’s manual with the hope that it might be an added tool in the effective discipling of men and women.  I hear so many earnest brethren talking about discipleship and the dire need for it and I have reviewed many written helps.  Somehow there seems to be an absence of a fairly concise written instructions manual which sets forth the discipleship process, beginning at the starting point, followed by an enumeration of its various aspects in a progressive and systematic way.  It is my hope that Basic Discipleship meets that need.

          It is my deep desire that this will be a useful and effective tool, enabling many to do a better job.  It is written especially to enable the common man to do the job of discipleship.  Hopefully, it will make this great work, which is the responsibility of all of God’s children, to appear less mystical and intimidating.  In this manual you will see how to do it and have a ready reference guide to help you stay on track.  Take heart, brother.  You can be a discipler.  It is not a work for the elite only.

          I am deeply grateful to so many who have shared ideas with me, either in word or written form.  Basic Discipleship is mainly a compilation and organization of the concepts and practices of a mighty host of Godly people, some living on earth and some at home in heaven.
