BEFORE
YOU START
As one who would take another under your wing and become his or
her discipler (mentor), you want to do your very best and be effective.
The following advice is offered to enable you to do a good job.
1.
Always be meek and humble in spirit, never with the attitude that
you are up here while your disciple is down there. (I
Peter 3:4)
2.
Lead. That not only means
taking your disciple through predetermined paces and capitalizing on teaching
opportunities; it also means that you must have the truth yourself.
You cannot teach that which you do not know. (I Timothy 2:2)
3. Use repetition. It is fundamental to the learning process. (Phi. 3:1)
4. Be an example. (I Timothy 4:12). More things are caught than taught.
5. Capitalize on real-life events to make applications and teach lessons. Jesus did so routinely.
6. Keep in clear focus the fact that your aim is to make a discipler out of this person. Think of Genesis 1:28 in a spiritual sense. Share this vision repeatedly with your disciple.
7. Keep Jesus Christ the center of all things. Exalt Him.
